Seniors with dementia may show anxiety or agitation in their hands. Signs include pulling or rubbing at clothes or bedding, rubbing hands together, twisting fingers, wringing hands, wandering, and repetitive speech. Sensory therapy or fidget items are an effective way to reduce anxiety, calm nerves, and provide comfort. Simple fidget items can provide an interactive, tactile, and engaging activity for those diagnosed with dementia.
Eastern Carolina Council AAA staff have constructed 400 fidget items to include mats and muffs. They have received donations of completed fidget items from Crystal Coast Church of the Nazarene in Morehead City, and the Croatan Quilters Guild in Havelock, North Carolina. AAA staff distributes these items to caregivers, providers, local hospitals, and long-term care facilities across the region for individuals that would benefit from these engaging activity items.
