New Bern Project Lifesaver Pilot Program

Eastern Carolina Council Area Agency on Aging (ECCAAA), New Bern Fire Department, and the New Bern Police Department have partnered together to bring the Project Lifesaver Program to New Bern, NC. Agencies are currently working together to develop the program and pilot it over the next year. ECCAAA applied and received an Alzheimer’s Foundation of America (AFA) Project Lifesaver grant in the fall of 2021. Grant proceeds were utilized to train local first responders and to purchase the technology to run the program. The Project Lifesaver program reduces the time, funds, and manpower needed for search and rescue missions involving an individual who wanders. By utilizing technology and techniques Project Lifesaver can aid in the search and rescue of individuals with Dementia. The search times for certified Project Lifesaver agencies have been reduced from hours, potentially days, down to minutes. Lifesaver agencies average 30 minutes, which is 95% less time than standard operations without the use of Project Lifesaver. Members enrolled in the program wear a bracelet that contains a battery-operated transmitter that emits a tracking signal. If the member wanders away, the caregiver notifies the assigned law enforcement agency. A search and rescue team than goes to the wanderer’s area and uses a mobile receiver to pick up the member’s signal, thus locating the person.
